The Demon Lover, Elizabeth Bowen’s tale of guilt and retribution, comes to The Leper Chapel on 17 to 19 November.

in situ‘s latest performance features Richard Spaul telling one of the greatest short stories of all time, as well as Saki’s Gabriel-Ernest, an uncanny exploration of homoeroticism in upper-class Edwardian society, and Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Jemima Puddleduck.

Richard explains: “In medieval legend, a woman takes a lover, little realising that he is a demon and will bear her away to Hell. But 20th century demons come in surprising forms, animal as well as human, and with different genders and sexualities.”

And, if you thought The Tale of Jemima Puddleduck was a children’s story, Richard warns: “not in this performance it isn’t”.
