Theatre and Landscape 2019 takes place in The Forest of Dean – a beautiful and culturally diverse region, full of remarkable churches, ruined abbeys, industrial archaeology and areas of great natural beauty. It has been an inspiration for many artists and writers, from Wordsworth’s famous ‘Tintern Abbey’ to the great television playwright Dennis Potter, who grew up in the region and invokes it in many of his works, especially ‘The Singing Detective’.
We are based in Cedars House, a beautiful house with large grounds in the village of Whitchurch, near Ross-on-Wye, and very near the famous beauty spot of Symonds Yat. As ever this will supply us with very spacious and comfortable accommodation and many inspiring work spaces inside and outside.
But we will also be doing several site visits, including the extraordinary medieval church at Kilpeck, absolutely covered in strange carved creatures and human forms. It’s a tiny church in a tiny village but world famous for its artworks, which are the outstanding example of a remarkable school of art called Hereford Romanesque.
Further south down the Wye Valley are the picturesque and evocative ruins of Tintern Abbey, immortalised by Wordsworth.
And then there is the Forest of Dean itself, an inspiration to many writers – Rupert Brooke, Edward Thomas, Robert Frost to name but a few.
On top of all this, the food will be very good and the company very convivial, with live music and good conversation every evening. A very enjoyable creative experience, both stimulating and relaxing.
If you would like to participate, we need a deposit of £300 to secure your place and we would need the balance a month before (ie. early August).
You can do that online by bank transfer or contact us for the details.
