Decameron

The Black Death is raging in Florence. Ten well-heeled young people flee the city and seek safety in the countryside. They keep themselves entertained by telling stories over ten days. Stories of love, romance, comedy and tragedy.

Decameron is a collection of stories compiled by Boccaccio in about 1353. It is also an extraordinarily detailed document of medieval life. The prologue to the first day, in which the Black Death is described in all its harrowing detail, is one of the main eye-witness accounts we have of that event.

in situ: director Richard Spaul explains: “All this happens at the same time. There’s no right place to be. You can sit, stand and walk around as you wish. Preston Old Church has a magnificent interior and a picturesque churchyard.”
