Theatre and Landscape 2018

If you are looking for a special creative experience, one that combines intensive and enjoyable artistic activity with good company, good food and attractive and peaceful surroundings, then you should try Theatre and Landscape.

You don’t need any special skills – you don’t need to have done any theatre before – you just need a willingness to enter enthusiastically into creative and collaborative work. Creative and fun, Theatre and Landscape will leave you invigorated, refreshed, inspired and wanting more.

We visit woods, moors, ancient monuments, islands, beaches, castles, and all sorts of other environments. Sometimes we create performances in those environments themselves (although never for an outside audience – the only spectators are the other participants). At other times our visits provide a stimulus for creating theatre back at our base.

The work will not be confined to “acting” in any restricted sense. There will also be opportunities for writing, visual art, group-devising, movement, voice work, and installation-making. Rather than teaching any particular discipline or technique, we want to bring out the artist in people and provide structures and stimuli that allow people’s artistic powers and interests to develop. Previous performing (or any other kind of) experience is not necessary, but a willingness to plunge wholeheartedly into collaborative work is of course essential. We think the course will appeal to artists of any level of experience and in any medium (dancers, writers, musicians, storytellers, visual artists, actors, singers) and to people in any walk of life, who enjoy doing, or would like to do, collaborative and creative work, whether they think of themselves as artists or not!

The work will be varied – ranging from warm-ups, exercises and excursions with the whole group, to work in small groups, pairs and solos.

The accommodation consists of shared rooms (mostly twins) allocated on a single-sex basis. We can accommodate some couples. All the accommodation is of a good standard and very comfortable.

The food is all prepared on site and is of a very high standard. It is predominantly vegetarian, though not necessarily vegan, but there are some options for omnivores!

Friday August 31 – Friday September 7, 2018

Hinning House, Esk Valley, The Lake District

£550 per person
(This includes accommodation, food and drink, tuition, travel throughout the week, art materials. It doesn’t include travel to and from the venue, but it is often possible to share transport.)

Theatre and Landscape 2018 takes place in The Lake District – a National Park and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a fascinating cultural heritage. An inspiration for William and Dorothy Wordsworth and other Romantic poets, notably Coleridge; home of John Ruskin, art critic, painter and social reformer; this is where Beatrix Potter painted mushrooms and created her much-loved children’s stories; this is where the great modernist artist Kurt Schwitters spent his last years after the trauma of World War 2.

We’ve got lots of interesting site visits lined up, including a visit to Brantwood, home of John Ruskin on the banks of Coniston Water. We’ll be visiting Elterwater, where Kurt Schwitters created his Merzbarn – one of the earliest examples of Installation Art. From a much earlier epoch, there’s the atmospheric ruin of the Roman Fort at Hardnott – a remote and eerie spot.

Our accommodation – Hinning House – is a big house in very spacious grounds very close to beautiful Eskdale. Lots of wildlife and walks. It will be a very nice and comfortable place for eating, sleeping, doing music and generally hanging out, but also a stimulating environment for the creative
work itself.

On top of all this, the food will be very good and the company very convivial.

If you would like to participate, we need a deposit of £250 to secure your place and we would need the balance a month before (ie. early August). You can give us a cheque or make a bank transfer. Get in touch with us to sort that out.
