The Measure for Measure Project

Shakespeare’s work is full of memorable scenes, great characters and has challenged performers and directors for several hundred years. There are plenty of challenges involved, but also huge rewards. It’s great stuff, but can seem intimidating: there have been rather narrow and restrictive ideas about how it should be done. The language, though amazing, can be difficult and hard to make sense of; sometimes it’s not well taught at school and people are put off. We will work hard to dispel all these preconceptions!

One of the so-called ‘problem plays’ – uncomfortably poised between comedy and tragedy – Measure for Measure is set in a sexually-repressive Vienna, and concerns a young man called Claudio, condemned to death for getting his girlfriend pregnant, and his sister Isabella, who, seeking to save his life, receives an outrageous offer from Angelo, the city’s governor, who is deputising for the absent Duke. He will reprieve her brother in return for sex. Meanwhile the Duke has gone underground. Disguised as a friar, he experiences the nastier side of life in the city’s brothels and prisons and learns of his deputy’s wicked scheme. The plot thickens.

Death Penalty; status of sex workers; authoritarian government; sleaze – all sorts of issues as urgent now as they were 400 years ago.
